Ampicillin is an aminopenicillin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections.

Ampicillin treats bacterial infections only. It will not work for viral infections like the common cold, flu, or COVID-19.

Common uses include:

Respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis);

Urinary tract infections (UTIs);

Gastrointestinal infections (salmonella, shigella);

Ear, nose, and throat infections;

Meningitis and blood infections (septicemia).

HOW IT WORKS

Ampicillin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It works by targeting the cell walls of bacteria. Specifically, it inhibits the synthesis of peptidoglycan - the outer mesh-like wall bacteria need to survive - causing the cell walls to weaken, break open, and kill the bacteria.

HOW TO TAKE

Take Ampicillin on an empty stomach - either 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal - with a full glass of water. Food slows down how well your body absorbs it. Doses are usually spaced evenly every 6 hours around the clock to keep a steady level of medicine in your bloodstream. Take every dose until the prescription is finished, even if symptoms stop. Stopping early can allow surviving bacteria to multiply and develop resistance to antibiotics.

OVERDOSE

If you suspect an accidental overdose, seek emergency medical care.

Overdose symptoms are severe stomach pain, persistent vomiting, severe diarrhea, confusion, dark urine, or seizures.

MISSED DOSE

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed capsule and return to your normal routine. Do not take two capsules at once to compensate for a missed dose.

SIDE EFFECTS

Most side effects are manageable, but a few require urgent care.

Common (non-emergency) ones may include: mild nausea or vomiting; mild diarrhea or loose stools; black, hairy tongue or sore mouth.

Among the severe side effects are severe, watery, or bloody diarrhea; signs of allergic reaction (hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of face/throat); unexplained bruising, fever, or pale skin.

STORAGE

Store Ampicillin at room temperature. Keep it away from excessive moisture, heat, and direct light (avoid storing in humid bathroom cabinets). Store the capsules in a tightly closed container out of the reach of children and pets.
